My old, trusty, RCA DVD player started to give a lot of trouble (I had bought it in 1999 after all) so I decided to look at blogs and news for my next DVD player. I found out a lot of people recommending the Phillips DVP642 player, not only for its price (a big plus at around $45 in Amazon) but for its amazing video quality and ability to play almost anything that looks like a DVD disc.
The unit is very thin and light, with an attractive silver color. The remote is good, although you have to get used to a rather awkward function; the fast-forward and fast-rewind keys on the remote are actually to skip chapters, not the video. For that, you need to select the arrows on the top of the remote. Once you get used to this key map, you’ll be fine (although at the most annoying moments I forget about it).
The unit will read DivX, Photo discs, MP3 discs, movies without any problems. The startup is fast and the unit is silent.
If you have a progressive scan monitor or HDTV, you will be amazed at the picture. There’s no flicker and color, brightness and saturation is spot-on.
Did I mention it costs $45 dollars? I highly recommend this player.
